Create some wonderful memories for you and your kids

by Heather

Take some time over the Summer Holidays to create some wonderful memories for you and your kids. It doesn’t have to be something big and expensive: Bake a cake together, have a picnic, write “Why I think you’re fantastic” letters to each other and take lots of photos. They grow up so fast. In a few short years you will find these pictures & letters and they will be worth more than gold.

During our move up to Scotland in 2006 we found a box of videos we’d forgotten about and sat for over an hour with tears streaming down our faces watching a little girl of nearly two, chatting away to the camera as she climbed up on the furniture to reach the window sill, where she just sat and gazed at the moon as if it was the most magical thing she had ever seen.

The tears were mostly because both of us had forgotten that memory.  How many other precious times have slipped quietly out of our lives, gone forever?  I now set aside the time to create the memories.  I love scrapbooks and I’m always collecting things that will make special mementoes.

Everyone told me that the time with our daughter would fly by in the wink of an eye and I thanked them kindly and smiled.  Now I know they spoke the truth and I don’t want to miss out on a single precious moment.

Next weekend our little girl turns 15 and if I could pass on some wisdom to new parents it would be this:

“Enjoy the tiny moments; never wish it away; be there as much as you possibly can; buckle up for the ride and keep your eyes wide open so that you don’t miss a single thing”

And they do grow up so fast. It seems like yesterday that I had those moments. We had craft night every Thursday and they each got to plan and make dinner with me one time a week. Those memories are some of my fondest.

My son isn’t quite one yet and I can already see the truth in this! The time flies SO fast. I take a billion pictures and lots of videos to try to preserve as much as I can. Every day I look at him and take in all that baby goodness – the open mouth curious gape as he sees something new, that quick laugh when we make funny faces, his little hands already so adept at picking up and putting into his mouth small bits of fuzz and other things that do not belong anywhere near the mouth. I often wish I could just pause things RIGHT HERE and enjoy them a little longer.

What a lovely blog and so true, every memory is precious. My oldest daughter is 18 and I am not sure where the time has gone.

Julia, what lovely memories to treasure. I love all our little weekly rituals and special times together, they are so precious. I’m hoping that legacy will pass on through the generations. Much love xx

AJ, I remember that first year when every day there was something new and they change so quickly. Zoe started walking around this time and then the whole world changed again! It’s wonderful to press the pause button and just drink it all in. Enjoy ~ I’m so envious. Much love xx

Nicky, I bet those 18 years are a blur! Our babies are soon adults and our job is done. The next big challenge is letting go LOL. Much love xx

A great, thoughtful post. Speaking as a 64 year old now, I enjoyed the read.

Cherishing and cultivating good memories = a great idea!

Enjoy your day,

Lee
